Happy National Sandwich Day!

What a wonderful day to celebrate.  I would venture to say the most versatile of food creations.

The story goes that the sandwich is named for John Montague, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich.  He was known as a rogue and a gambler and didn’t want to take a break from gambling to eat so told his cook to bring him something he could eat and still keep gambling.  His cook brought him roast beef between two pieces of toast and people began to ask for “what sandwich is having” and hence the name was born.

In reality however, the sandwich was around in many countries and many forms for many years prior to that.

We celebrated National Sandwich Day by creating two delicious, simple, and elegant steak sandwiches.  We were lucky enough to make these sandwiches on WFLA Tampa.  The link is forthcoming.

The first sandwich is a ribeye steak sandwich on butter grilled Challah bread with a fresh made chimichurrri sauce and over roasted tomatoes.

You can easily replicate this sandwich.  Start with a 8 ounce rib eye and season with kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.  Grill to a medium rare (I actually prefer rare but medium rare with a great rib eye is also great.  I chose Challah bread – an eggy butter delicious bread and toasted with butter.  I topped this one with a tart chimichurri and oven roasted tomatoes.  It was delicious.

Here is a great chimichurri recipe.

  • 1 cup flat parsley leaves
  • 5 medium cloves garlic
  • ½ extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ¼ cup red onion finely diced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Put parsley and garlic in a food process and pulse until they are finely chopped.  Transfer to a bowl.  Whisk in oil, vinegar, water, red onion, kosher salt, and red pepper flakes until completely blended.

Toast the bread, put on grilled rib eye and top with chimichurri and oven roasted tomatoes.  Delicious!!

The second sandwich is a filet sandwich with a blue cheese compuond butter and crispy onions on a soft french hamburger bun.

Stay tuned for the blue cheese butter recipe.  It is super easy and adds great flavor to the steak.

Both these sandwiches are a great way to celebrate National Sandwich Day.  They are so delicious  – especially when you use a great steak like those from Kansas City Steaks.  Check them out here.
